Cluster feeding
What exactly is cluster feeding?
Baby cluster feeding is exactly what it sounds like: feeding your child in "clusters" throughout the day. Babies need to be fed at least eight times in a 24-hour period during their first few days of life. But, before you set your clock and your expectations, keep in mind that newborns rarely have a predictable feeding schedule.
According to the American Academy of Pediatrics, a typical newborn feeding will last between 15 and 20 minutes, leaving baby nourished and satisfied for three to four hours (AAP). Cluster feeding, on the other hand, involves a baby having several feedings within a short amount of time followed by a longer stretch of sleep.
When your baby's feeding schedule abruptly changes for two or three days and then returns to a more regular feeding pace, you'll know he or she is cluster feeding and it's not just their preferred eating schedule.
